Carles family moved to London when he was aboutten years old. But they became poor, and the Charles dad had to live in some kind of prison, but for people who hadn't payd the rent. So Charles had to work 12 hours per day on a "shoecream-factory". And even if he worked that much, he didn't get a lot of money. So just because of the work, Charles didn't had a lot of time for the school. But one thing he learned was to "stenograph", and that helped him a lot when he wanted to have another job later.

When he was 22 years old he started to work as a journalist. He wrote for the newspaper Morning Chronicle, and it was a lot about election campaigns.
In 1836 married Charles a woman called Catherine Hogarth, and they got 10 kids, all tough 1 died after 8 months.

It wasn't the shortest way to London, but he was lucky to stay with a old lady one of the nights. He got food, water and new shoes.
It was quite hard to find a good place to stay when he arrived in London, but suddently was there a boy in the same age as Oliver who started to talk to him. It turned out that the boys name was "the fox", and he offered Oliver a place to stay. But little did Oliver know, that he had moved in with a gang, that also was thieves.
